Sample Itinerary Dominican Republic - 10 day program

The Dominican Republic functions differently than the United States, especially when it comes to schedules and timelines. Despite our best attempts to plan thoroughly, unanticipated circumstances and last-minute changes to the itinerary will happen. Service projects, which are determined according to the needs and desires of the host community, can also change at the last minute.  Students often say that learning to be flexible and accepting different (and often challenging) cultural practices is one of the most valuable things they take from a World Leadership School program. Please be flexible and remember that adapting to change is a critical skill for future leaders working in global settings!

Day 1
·    Arrive in Santo Domingo
·    Transfer to Cambita Garabitos
·    Welcome dinner and orientation
·    Curriculum: Why We Are Here
·    Reflection: Fears and Goals
·    Meet homestay families
·    Stay with host families from this point forward

Day 2
·    Homestay debrief
·    Curriculum: Global Issues Scavenger Hunt
·    Visit to a local farm
·    Cookout at the local farm
·    Visit service project site and introduction to project
·    Stay at homestay

Day 3
·    Service work, day I
·    Curriculum: Leadership Styles and Temperaments
·    Afternoon language lessons with local students
·    Stay at homestay

Day 4
·    Service work, day II
·    Visit Haitian community on outskirts of Cambita Garabitos
·    Discussion of Dominican – Haitian history and relations
·    Curriculum: Local Leaders and Leadership Styles
·    Salsa dancing lessons

Day 5
·    Service work, day III
·    Introduction to Haitian culture
·    Curriculum: Building a Utopia

Day 6
·    Morning departure to coast
·    Visit to local beach
