What We Do

Mission
The mission of World Leadership School is to empower young leaders to find new and innovative approaches to the world’s most pressing problems.

Strategy
We do this by helping K-12 schools build global education programs that produce innovative and inspired leaders. Most of our programs include 10-28 day Student Service and Leadership Programs in rural communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the U.S.
Beyond these travel experiences, we help schools build global education programs through Strategic and Curricular Consulting, Faculty Development Programs and In-Service Trainings/Global Partnerships.

Philosophy
We see ourselves as change agents that help schools transform their school cultures alongside a fast-changing and volatile world.

Our global education programs help students build 21st Century Skills, including the ability to work in teams, analyze and synthesize information, be creative, tolerate failure, respect others, and find passion and purpose.

We help schools manage the transition from where they are now to where they want to be in the future. This is a move, broadly speaking, away from teacher- and content-centered forms of education and towards more student-centered and project-based learning approaches.

Values
•    We believe that global problems such as climate change, poverty and sub-standard education demand new and innovation solutions and styles of leadership;
•    We believe that our community leaders overseas often embody these new solutions and styles of leadership;
•    We believe that community immersion and service projects can form an effective platform for training young leaders, given the right curriculum and a clear intention;
•    We believe the best global education programs are based on long-term relationships with overseas sister schools and are built into the school year curriculum;
•    We believe the best community development initiatives are based on equal partnering on a common goal and peer-to-peer collaboration between students and faculty from different cultures;
•    We are committed to remaining a small organization with a staff of passion, purpose and diverse strengths;

•    We only work with schools that share our passion and purpose;

International Service and Leadership Trips
We offer 10-21 day service learning programs in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Peru, Costa Rica, Belize, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. We use community immersion and service as a platform for working on global issues and leadership. During our trips, students spend most of their time living in a small community setting and working on a service project.

A World Leadership School trip has three basic elements:

Global Issues – Each program focuses on a single global issue such as climate change, biodiversity or sub-standard education. First–hand experience and reflection sessions help students overcome what we call the “barrier of complexity” in order to develop confidence and understand an issue.

Service Learning – Students do volunteer work related to the global issue. This work provides hands-on learning and allows students to progress from understanding to action.

Leadership Training – World Leadership School’s leadership training emphasizes study of self and others. We start with self-assessment tools that help students better understand their communication style and emotional intelligence. We work alongside local leaders, understand how they lead, and discuss elements of good leadership. We continue with one-on-one coaching and goal setting. Our aim is to start students on the path to answer the following questions: “What is my leadership style? What is my leadership vision? What do I stand for?”

Language Immersion – Living and working in a French- or Spanish-speaking community is a powerful way to learn a language. Language classes are not part of every trip but can be integrated into a trip curriculum upon request.

Global Partnerships
For schools that are ready to make the next step, World Leadership School provides in-service faculty training and curricular support for year-round “Global Partnerships”. These interactive distance learning programs are embedded in the school curriculum and help spread global education across an entire school culture. We believe that Global Partnerships are an important component of an impactful global education program. For more information, see our page on Global Partnerships.
