World Leadership School

Create Next-Generation Leaders with WLS

World Leadership School is a small team of committed individuals. Together, we help K-12 schools reimagine learning and create next-generation leaders.

We do this by taking students out into the world and coaching teachers to bring purpose to learning. We take students out into the world by helping our schools forge Collaborative Leadership Programs with rural schools and NGOs around the world and in the USA. Our programs focus on community immersion. During these 10-21 day learning programs, students live with host families, spend time in a rural school or shadow an NGO, and form relationships with local students and leaders.

We help teachers bring purpose to learning through our Virtual Coaching Institute for teachers and teaching teams. Through regular one-on-one work sessions, our coaches help teachers explore new ideas, shift their approach, and create showcases of learning that embody the future of learning at their school. We support our coaching work with in-service workshops, educator travel programs, and our gatherings and conferences, like our K-12 Purpose Summit.

At the core of our work are our instructors, coordinators, and teacher coaches. Our employment opportunities are limited and arise sporadically to fit our current and expected needs. Our current opportunities are listed below along with instructions about how to apply.

Contract-Based Instructor

We take a great amount of care to choose instructors who are talented, experienced, and safety-conscious. We try to make the process as easy as possible for you. World Leadership School hires 1-2 instructors per program. Instructors are responsible for the implementation of objectives, curriculum, group dynamics, program logistics with local country coordinator and subcontractors, risk management, accounting, program evaluations, final trip inventory, and have the overall responsibility for all other aspects of the program.

The following are characteristics/qualifications for instructors:

  • Education: We firmly believe that excellent facilitation of our programs goes beyond formal education, and we do not require a specific education level for this role. We welcome instructors from a wide range of backgrounds, whether you hold a bachelor’s degree in education, have expertise in a particular subject, or have gained valuable knowledge through real-world experiences.
  • Educational Experience: At least 5-7 years of education experience in the classroom, wilderness setting or international programs. We prefer leaders who have led student groups before.
  • Language/International Travel Experience: It is not a requirement, but it’s a bonus for instructors to be proficient in any spoken languages of the communities we work in, and/or have a background in working or living in the area.
  • Training: All prospective instructors must be able to attend our annual instructor training. All lodging, food and transportation will be covered by the World Leadership School.
  • Flexibility/Patience/Organization: We look for people who have the patience and experience to respond to stress, crisis, change, and non-glamorous tasks in positive and productive ways. Must have the ability to organize and assure a smooth flow of activities and improvise when necessary.
  • Personality/Motivation: We look for self-motivated and resilient individuals who can solve problems independently, build positive working relationships with our staff, students, community partners, senior faculty, or administrators.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT: Wilderness First Responder is an 80-hour nationally recognized curriculum that includes standards for wilderness emergency medical treatment. World Leadership School is one of the few organizations that reimburse its instructors for WFR training and re-certifications. We do not pay for lodging, transport, and food. We prefer that our instructors take the full 80-hour (10-day) version and not the 5-day version. WFR courses are not regulated so there is a wide range of quality in WFR providers. We encourage instructors to go with one of the following companies: NOLS WMI, WMA, SOLO, Aerie, Medical Officer, Remote Medical, Desert Mountain Medicine, or Wilderness Medical Treatment Center. Please check with us first if you do not use one of these providers, or need to take a shorter WFR version.

Hiring Process

  • After you have reviewed the job qualifications above, submit your application below.
  • We review your materials, and if your experience and qualifications match our needs at the time, we will be in touch to schedule an interview by Zoom. Interviews usually last about 30-45 minutes. There is no need to prepare for the interview and we do not expect any prior knowledge of global issues. We want to get a sense of who you are and why you would make a good instructor.
  • We call references and perform background checks. If we decide to hire you, we will send you a contract, medical form, and other paperwork for you to fill out, sign, and return. You mail the paperwork back to our office along with a copy of your medical training certificate (WFR, etc.).
  • We send you the instructor manual, which will help you prepare for the staff training.
  • We book your airfare both for the training session and the programs you are contracted for.
  • You come to instructor training and then you are set to lead a World Leadership School program.

Please note that while we accept instructor applications on a rolling basis, our hiring process typically runs between July and October. Don’t hesitate to reach out to info@worldleadershipschool.com for updates about where we are in the process and our staffing needs.
